These are the rules for liquids in your hand baggage:

You may only carry liquids and gels in packaging of no more than 100 millilitres

1. These packages must be kept in a clear plastic bag
2. One clear plastic bag is permitted per passenger
3. The clear plastic bag must not exceed 1 litre
4. The clear plastic bag must be resealable

Passengers may bring their own clear plastic bag. During the introductory period, clear plastic bags will be available free at all Dutch airports.

There are three exceptions:

1. Baby food to be used for the duration of your trip;
2. Medications to be used for the duration of your trip;
3. Special diet food to be used for the duration of your trip.

After going through passport control, you may still purchase items (duty-free) at European airports and on board aircraft owned by European airlines. Liquids and gels purchased after going through passport control or on board aircraft will – if necessary – be packaged and sealed for you by shop assistants or cabin crew. The stamp is valid for one day. If you are transferring to another flight at your destination airport, do not break the seal until you arrive at your final destination.

Present hand baggage items separately

All liquids must be presented separately at the ticket desk during the hand baggage check. All items must fit easily inside the clear plastic bag, and the bag must be closed. The clear plastic bag must be easily resealable. Coats, jackets, and large electronics such as laptops must also be presented separately during the hand baggage check.

Different rules may apply to countries outside the EU

Flights from the United Kingdom

As a result of new regulations, passengers departing from UK airports may only take one piece of hand baggage, regardless of the class in which they are travelling.

Baggage rules outside the EU

All flights from the United States and Canada

The following rules apply to liquids, gels and / or aerosols during the hand baggage check:

• Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols are not permitted, with the exception of one resealable, clear, 1-litre plastic bag that may contain liquids, gels, and/or aerosols in packaging of 100ml or less per item.
• The items must fit easily inside the plastic bag and the bag must be completely closed and sealed and presented separately for verification during the hand baggage check.

You may have the items listed below in your possession, however if they are not packaged in a resealable, clear, 1-litre plastic bag and/or if the items exceed 100ml, you must declare them to the Transport Security Administration (TSA) during the hand baggage check:

• bottle food/milk (including breast milk) and baby food/juice in packaging, if a baby or toddler is travelling
• medications (liquids, gels, and/or aerosols)
• liquids (including juice) or gels for passengers with diabetes or other medical conditions.

All other liquids, gels, and/or aerosols must be transported in checked baggage. To facilitate checks for explosives, please do not lock your baggage when travelling to the United States.

All flights to the United States

The items must fit easily inside the plastic bag and the bag must be completely closed and sealed and presented separately from the passenger’s hand baggage for a visual check or x-ray screening.

The limitations of 100ml packaging and a 1-litre bag do not apply to liquids, gels, and/or aerosols that fall within the following categories and that are packaged in reasonable quantities for the duration of your trip, unless otherwise authorised by the destination country or the airline concerned:

• bottle food/milk (including breast milk) and baby food/juice in packaging, if a baby or toddler is travelling
• medications (liquids, gels, and/or aerosols)
• liquids (including juice) or gels for passengers with diabetes or other medical conditions.
• All other liquids, gels and / or aerosols must be carried in the checked baggage.

All other liquids, gels, and/or aerosols must be transported in checked baggage. To facilitate checks for explosives, please do not lock your baggage when travelling to the United States.

All flights from India

Liquids/gels/pastes and other products of a similar composition may not be carried separately in hand baggage or in bags of clothing on board aircraft. This does not include baby food or medications/inhalers that are accompanied by a prescription.

Passengers may carry small quantities of liquids/gels/pastes and other products of a similar composition in small, resealable clear plastic bags for the duration of their trip. However, items may not exceed 100ml each.

In addition, only one piece of hand baggage is permitted per passenger on board the aircraft. Any passenger carrying more than one piece of hand baggage will not be permitted to go through passport control and will be sent back to the check-in desk.

All flights from the Philippines

Liquid substances may not be taken on board with the exception of bottle food, breast milk, or juice (if a baby or toddler is travelling), prescription medication in the passenger’s name, insulin, and other non-prescription medication, and cabin crew care kits.

For Hong Kong

In accordance with new guidelines set out by the international civil aviation organisation, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) set out new rules for the screening of liquids, gels, and aerosols that went into effect on 21 March 2007. Click here to read the new security measures for hand baggage at HKIA.

For Taiwan

The following rule has been in effect since 1 March 2007:

Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols may not be taken on board separately in hand baggage. Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols are only permitted on board in packages of less than 100ml each in separate resealable, clear, 1-litre plastic bags. For Korea

New security measures for liquids, gels and aerosols at Incheon Airport

In connection with a new threat regarding liquid explosives and compliance with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), passengers should please note that, as of 1 March 2007, new rules for carrying liquids, gels, and/or aerosols in hand baggage are now in effect. These rules apply to all international flights (including transfer and transit flights) departing from South Korea. Click here for more information.

USA / Canada tax-free purchases

Passengers who will transfer to another flight at Schiphol Airport on their journey to the United States are advised not to purchase any tax-free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols at the departure airport or during the flight to Amsterdam.

Passengers transferring within the United States or Canada are advised to transport liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased duty-free in their checked baggage after the customs check.

All flights from Romania

Tax-free liquid and gel products purchased at the airport by passengers travelling to or via EU countries must be placed in a sealed bag intended for this purpose. Tax-free liquid and gel products purchased on board must also be packaged in a sealed bag.

All flights to or from Australia

The following rule has been in effect since 31 March 2007:

Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols may not be taken on board separately in hand baggage. Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols are only permitted on board in packages of less than 100ml each in separate resealable, clear, 1-litre plastic bags. This rule does not apply to liquids for medical purposes, including baby food. Click here for more information about the new safety measures.

Transit passengers may NOT take tax-free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased at a departure airport outside of Australia or on board the aircraft. Passengers and transit passengers are permitted to purchase liquid and gel products, including duty-free items, within the secure areas in Australian airports and take these items on board.

For passengers in transit in Amsterdam

Duty-free liquid items purchased at an airport outside the European Union that have not been checked in will be seized at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, even if these items are sealed.

In accordance with safety regulations at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, plastic bags measuring 30x40cm will be confiscated if their capacity exceeds 1 litre. The maximum capacity for plastic bags is 1 litre.
